Some organizations we love:
Cientifico Latino has the mission of helping students in STEM from underrepresented minorities and other disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them the resources and mentorship to successfully navigate graduate school applications in the sciences. We have a one-on-one mentorship program (GSMI) and a program to help you navigate the first year of grad school (GSEC). Please check our website for extensive list of useful resources: webinars, databases of fellowships and summer research opportunities, helpful guides (how to email professors, how to apply as an international student, etc.). Please don't let the organization's name mislead you, our goal is to help students from ALL backgrounds who face extra challenges to be part of science!
From their About Us section: "Leading Edge is an initiative to improve the gender diversity of life sciences faculty in the United States by providing women and non-binary postdocs with
1) a platform to present their work,
2) an opportunity to meet and connect with one another,
3) mentorship and career development training from world leaders in biomedical research."
Check their Resources page for some useful publications on various aspects of postdoc life.
From their About Us section: "The Black Microbiologists Association (BMA) was created in response to the sustained underrepresentation of Black people in microbiological education, training and research both here in the U.S. and globally. [...] Our mission is to support the collective work of pursuing equity in academia, industry, government, and beyond through advocacy, professional development, science communication, and outreach."
If you are and undergraduate student and would love to participate in a summer research program but are unable to travel for in-person research: NSURP is a virtual research program for students from disadvantaged backgrounds in microbiology and immunology. It has all the perks and community aspects of in-person programs so you don't miss out on anything! #nolabnoproblem
